 Common types of meniscal tears

Tears only in the shaded area can be repaired

Meniscal tears will not heal if left untreated and therefore require arthroscopic surgery to provide relief. Some meniscal tears can be repaired depending on the type of tear and its location. The tear must be only in the areas with adequate blood supply to permit healing. This area is shaded on the picture above. Tears extending out of this area cannot be repaired and will be partially removed to re-create a smooth contour.
