The Knee

Total Knee Replacement

Total Knee Replacement is a surgical procedure that actually does not replace the knee, but rather resurfaces the moving areas of the knee with specialized metal and plastic components. These components are held to the bone with a special cement that provides many years of fixation.

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4

The femur and tibia bones are cut to fit their metal components. A special polyethylene plastic is locked onto the metal tibia component which will glide against the metal femur. The undersurface of the patella is also cut and fitted with a special polyethylene plastic that will glide against the femur. These devices last for many years, and have proven to be a very successful treatment for degenerative arthritis.
