1. Is an overnight hospital stay required for this procedure?
Hip arthroscopy can be performed as an outpatient procedure. I prefer that my patients stay overnight to permit the use of a CPM (continuous passive motion) machine immediately after surgery. A CPM machine promotes early hip motion after surgery to speed your recovery. This machine is used for the first 24 hours after surgery. An overnight stay also allows a physical therapist to work with you on the day of surgery and before you go home.
2. How much pain will I be in after surgery?
The amount of pain experienced is minimal, when compared to traditional hip surgery. An overnight stay in the hospital makes it is much easier to control the pain as opposed to the surgery being performed on an outpatient basis.
3. Will I need crutches after surgery?
I keep the patient on crutches for 3-5 days if there are problems only within the labrum or synovium of the hip. If additional problems are corrected during the surgery, you may require 2-4 weeks on crutches.
4. Will I need a brace or support after surgery?
Usually a brace or support is not needed. However, if a repair of your labrum or capsule is required during surgery, you will need to wear a support while sleeping.
5. How long will I need physical therapy?
Physical therapy is typically needed 3 times a week for 3-6 weeks. This will depend upon your progress and the specific surgery performed during the hip arthroscopy.
6. How soon can I return to work?
Under most circumstances, patients can return to work within a week. This will vary based again upon the specific surgery performed during the hip arthroscopy and your individual progress.
