Common Shoulder Problems

The human shoulder joint is a "ball and socket" type joint, which has the greatest range of motion of all the joints in the body. The shoulder is stabilized by a complex group of muscles, tendons, ligaments and a capsule which covers the humeral head and glenoid structures. Injuries to any of these structures, whether traumatic or degenerative, may produce symptoms ranging from mild to severe pain. In the shoulder, this pain often causes patients to use their shoulder less, and to limit the shoulder to a more "guarded" range of motion. This lack of use may result in a generalized weakening of the shoulder's muscles and a decreased range of motion which may be quite difficult to regain. Because of this, it is important to address shoulder problems early, to ensure a complete recovery.

Many minor aches and strains may be resolved with a program of conservative treatment which may include decreased activity, anti-inflammatory medications and a program of Physical Therapy prescribed by your doctor.

Physical Therapy is of great importance in the treatment of shoulder problems. It can be prescribed as conservative treatment or following a surgical procedure. Exercises and activities specific to the shoulder's complex muscles and related tissues, are supervised by experienced Physical Therapists to speed your recovery.
